OVERVIEW

Steven J. Buttacavoli focuses his practice on securities litigation.


Prior to joining Berman DeValerio in 2009, Mr. Buttacavoli worked as an associate at Foley Hoag LLP in Boston where he defended securities class actions and Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement actions, conducted internal investigations, responded to criminal investigations by the United States Attorney’s Office, and advised clients in connection with legal and reputational risk analysis and mitigation strategies. Mr. Buttacavoli has also advised clients with respect to legal and ethical considerations in the context of relationships with federal, state and local government.


While in law school, Mr. Buttacavoli was a Senior Articles and Notes Editor for the American Criminal Law Review.

REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCE

  • Currently representing co-lead plaintiff in In re BP p.l.c. Securities Litigation. An integral member of the litigation team who provided assistance drafting the amended complaint and opposition to defendants' motion to dismiss, and is currently analyzing evidence obtained through discovery and preparing for additional discovery.
  • Currently representing four Ohio pension funds in connection with an individual action, originally filed in Ohio state court, involving the funds' purchases of BP ordinary shares on the London Stock Exchange.
  • Currently representing lead plaintiff in In re General Electric Co. Securities Litigation. Investigated and analyzed potential securities fraud claims, drafted the consolidated amended complaint, drafted lead plaintiff's opposition to defendants' motions to dismiss, and is currently conducting discovery and analyzing evidence obtained through discovery. The parties have reached a tentative settlement, which is before the court for preliminary approval.
  • Advised numerous clients in connection with potential claims involving custodian banks' foreign currency exchange pricing practices.
  • Helped coordinate lead plaintiff's investigation and analysis of securities fraud claims against the former top executives of BankUnited, drafted the consolidated amended complaint and opposition to defendants' motions to dismiss in the case against BankUnited, and was extensively involved with efforts to achieve a settlement in the BankUnited litigation.
